International travelers flying into and out of Atlantas Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will now see a brand new look. The Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal, which opened in May 2012, puts a new face on international travel at the worlds busiest airport. The new facility will help meet the demands of increased oversees travel in the coming decades.
The first thing passengers flying out of Atlanta will notice is the new entrance to the airport. Passengers will access the new international terminal from the east side of the airport, off I-75 at Exit 239. The main terminal, which now handles only domestic flights, is still accessed from the original airport entrance off I-85. The international terminal has its own parking on that side of the airport. A free 24 hour shuttle will provide transportation between the two terminals.

Eight airlines will operate international flights out of the new facility. Those airlines are Air Canada, Air France, AirTran/Southwest, British Airways, Delta, KLM Royal Dutch, Korean Air, and Lufthansa. Atlantas airport now has 40 international gates, 12 in the new Concourse F and 28 in the existing Concourse E. Passengers are now able to fly to nearly 80 destinations in 50 countries. Following the completion of their merger, AirTran/Southwest is expected to add new routes to the Caribbean and Mexico. Other airlines are expected to add additional routes to Asia and South America.

The new terminal has an attractive design, with a sweeping roofline and soaring glass windows. The facility is LEED-certified. Travelers will have a variety of dining options in the new international terminal. Choices will include sit down restaurants, a tapas bar, a gourmet market, quick food options, bars, and a Starbucks. Retail shopping outlets will include Clutch, Brookstone, The Body Shop, Touch Table, Simply Books, and Tommy Hilfiger. Business services, personal services, and Wi-Fi are also available.

Holiday Worship Tips For Families With Deaf Children

For the holidays many families go to worship. Here are some tips for including your deaf child and making it fun!
1.Work with your place of worship to have an American Sign Language interpreter for worship services and activities. Usually you have to search for an interpreter who knows the vocabulary and has experience with your worship services. These interpreters are out there, you just have to start your search early! Your place of worship should pay for the interpreter. At our church, after a while we started making the arrangements with the interpreter directly via email and phone, and the church paid the interpreter, this was more efficient and avoided miscommunications.
2.Here is a big tip: work with someone involved with the worship services to get copies of the agenda, scriptures, hymns, and sheet music or at least the words to the songs that will be performed at the service for the interpreter before the worship services. Sometimes it is difficult for the interpreter to hear/understand the words of songs someone or the choir is signing.
3.For really well attended services, arrive early so your family can sit in the front row in order to see the interpreter without obstruction. The location for the interpreter and the entire deaf persons family should be reserved by the church.
4.Include your deaf child in any holiday related activity, for example making advent wreaths etc. With good planning, the interpreter should attend these activities too.
5.If your family will be participating in worship services include your deaf child along with your other children. For example, at one Christmas service our family had to read a couple of passages of scripture. Larry signed a passage and the interpreter interpreted. Larry has a Bible for the Deaf and he signed the passage from his Bible. Again, explain to the interpreter the format of the particular worship service and get the interpreter scripture passages etc early.

From the time we moved to Massachusetts, when Larry was 10 years old, right through to Larrys high school and university years we attended the Presbyterian Church in Sudbury, MA. We were blessed to have Pastor George Saylor who did a great job of including Larry in church activities and services. Pastor Saylor and elder Doris Soule did all that was necessary to ensure that an American Sign Language interpreter was available and paid, for all church activities that Larry attended. Doris Soule gave Larry his Bible for the Deaf. We were very lucky to find Marion Butland to interpret at church activities and services.

When Larry and Amrit were expecting Raveena and starting a family we moved from the Presbyterian Church in Sudbury to Grace Chapel in Lexington, MA. Grace Chapel has a Deaf Ministry with many Deaf members and American Sign Language interpreters for church activities and worship services.

Please let us hear your holiday worship tips!

Season’s Favorite Holiday Cookies

I have two childhood memories that center around Christmas cookies. My Mom’s no-bake cookies and my Aunt’s sugar cookies. I can still see my Mom stirring the cocoa for the no-bakes and can still smell their savory, sweet, aroma. I remember being just barely tall enough to peek up at the waxed paper-lined kitchen counter to sneak me a cookie while they were still warm.

My Aunt made the best sugar cookies that I can remember. The shapes that I remember the most were the Christmas trees, the candy canes, and the wreaths. I like soft doughy cookies and my Aunt’s were the best. She lived just three blocks down from our house and I still remember walking to her house with my parents…visiting, and eating those cookies. Those were the good old days.

What are the cookies that you remember as a child? Which ones were your favorites?

If you’re like most people…you will come up with the following four

*Sugar Cookies

*Chocolate Chip Cookies

*Peanut Butter Cookies

*Gingerbread Cookies

These four kinds of cookies are America’s top pick when it comes to holiday cookies. There are many variations of each kind. But my favorite…other than the cookies I mentioned at the beginning of this article, is chocolate chip cookies. Every Christmas, my Sister-In-Law brings everyone in the family a big bag of them. It’s a tradition with her. She enjoys baking chocolate chip cookies for us all.

Below is my Sister-In-Law’s recipe

(It’s actually the same recipe that is in the Betty Crocker cookbook)

bettycrocker.com

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/3 cup margarine or butter, softened

1/3 cup shortening

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cups all-purpose or whole wheat flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 package (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

(The original recipe calls for 1/2 cup chopped nuts, my Sister-In-Law doesn’t include nuts)

Directions

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix sugars, margarine, shortening, egg and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until light brown, 8 to 10 minutes.

Cool slightly before removing from cookie sheet. Makes about 3 1/2 dozen cookies.

I look forward to these every year. I too, have made them many times and they don’t last long around our house. My Husband loves them.

Do you bake cookies for the holidays? Everyone has their personal favorites.

If you’re baking cookies this Christmas, don’t forget to leave Santa a special plate full of them.

Happy Holidays to all!
